Design :: an act of collective collaborative decisions.
Elemental information::
Timber [natural resource] :: 250 nos., borrowed from Pan Ocean International
Rope [binder] :: 2750 m approx.
GI pipe [man-made] :: 200 nos, borrowed from Aima Construction
Photos [subject at stake] :: 350 images from 350 individuals
Area of exhibition :: 6700 sq ft
Paving blocks [man-made, footprint] :: 36 sq ft, 6ft x 6ft[160nos.] approx.
% of Footprint/Area of Exhibition Area :: 0.5%
Each element that makes the display structure, when on its own, lacks structural stability. However, once united, bonded by a force [rope], every element compliments its neighbouring elements. This process of unification propagates across the entire structure, thus reinforcing each element leading up to the ‘whole’.
This act of binding/packing is not based on a decision by a single person but rather, in a collective. Every unification point is a decision by one or more person. There are about 540 connection points [where the natural resource <timber> meets the man-made <GI pipe>]. Each point of connectivity is different. The differences in the knotting reflect a decision made by a person at a given moment, by the person’s mood, energy levels …
Contextual Interactive Information ::
Source observer animator
Sun Path, Wind, Water [Sea] [natural observer of the exhibition] light and shadows
Human Circulation [local observer, experiential progression] human interactions/visual continuity
Road Traffic [external observer at speed] structural perforations/visual ambiguity
The structure allows for visual interaction from a number of vantage points. The structure, though reacting with the line of vision does not entirely blind it, rather, it provides new depth and shadow. The structure is then, itself, part of the subject. The differing points of view are equally true and equally valid, based upon their own unique presumptions of time and space; are among a number of different interactions one may have with the exhibit, they each give out separate messages, which together embody the engagement of the whole.

Just tell me how many trees are cut to make this? I am sad
also for those seeking that) and take care of it for few days, a good opportunity to do something good. After clean maldives is million tree program. You can borrow this idea from pan timber.
Can you please plant some trees. 350 plants for each participant of the project. And they can name the tree after themselves (good opportunity to be famous
WHERE CAN I GET A T-SHIRT
hi nasreena,
thank you for your concern. these are borrowed from timber warehouses. they are going to be returned once the exhibition is over
kothalhu, sorry but the only remaining tshirts were given to people who requested for it at the exhibition today
and yes nasreena, that tree planting idea sounds great. maybe you will coordinate.
how about stickers
where can i see the selected pics…
i was disappointed with the selected photos. i cant get my head around it, was it to do with photos submitted or the judging. as a maldivian i am disappointed if this is what we have to offer.
Will the photos be available to see online anywhere?
I too would like the know when/where the photos are online
GW IS Not TRUE It Is Done To Promote “Communism” and Charge Higher “Taxes”. It’s A Conspiracy of “NEW WORLD ORDER”….
halo all,
we will try to upload the 350 photos as soon as exhibition work is done.
@nomancamera
It is important to understand that the Postcards campaign is not and never was meant to be a photo competition. The narrative as a whole is intended to show the Maldives as truly as possible, through the eyes of all Maldivians. Not necessarily just from the photographers etc with high end gear.
hani… thats exactly the point i was trying to get to… and thats what these people missed by making a wild selection. let me just be blunt. the panel of judges were highly unqualified cos they made themselves believe that they had the capacity to be judges for such a contest. please get off your high horses and do something real or in other words go hug a tree.
I think the emphasis of the Campaign was more about peoples perception of their own country, than about fancy photography is most relevant and brings a human value to the photos….
@nomancamera
Umm, you’re still missing the point as you’re still referring to this as a “contest”. I think this minivannews article sums it up pretty well;

I reemphasize that the Postcards campaign is in no way trying or claiming to be on the level of professional photo competitions like those held by national geographic. Such a selection would not be within the nature of the competition anyways. These are pictures by normal Maldivians, of greatly varying levels of skill and equipment, of their everyday lives as seen by them. A display of 350 professional photographers would go against this and I dare say would not have been as honest.
@Hani
then every photo should be just as important not just 350
